A Book Review: I read Sarah Dessen’s THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER and loved it! I think I loved it as much as John Green’s THE FAULT IN OUR STARS. This is the first Sarah Dessen book I’ve read. I know what you’re thinking. Have I been living under a rock? Close…I’ve been seriously focused on writing and learning writing craft.
In THE TRUTH ABOUT FOREVER, 16 year old Macy spends the year and a half after her father’s death trying to be the most perfect girl she can be. She does this by trying to fit into her “perfect” boyfriend’s carefully planned and ordered life. Until her boyfriend sends her an email using logic and sense to explain why they need to take a break from their relationship and reevaluate at the end of the summer. This knocks Macy’s carefully controlled life off-kilter. Macy begins to navigate through the grief of losing her dad, and the shock of losing her boyfriend by jumping into chaos. She takes a job with Wish Catering, staffed by a group of family and neighbors who seem to embrace chaos. I guess some people might find this book too quiet, but I could not put it down. It’s deep and emotional and in the end has a lovely, satisfying ending. Was it too big of a coincidence that both h and H lost one of their parents? Maybe, but if the writing is good and the emotions true, I’ll pretty much follow a writer anywhere they want to lead. 5 out of 5 stars.
On Writing: On tap today, writing and more writing. That is all.
On Social Media: I realized today, I’m doing a poor job finding a way to keep up with Twitter and FB. I cleaned up my email this morning and found too many Twitter following emails that I didn’t notice or follow up on. And on Twitter, it seems people give you just a few days to follow back and if you don’t they unfollow pretty quick. I get it. But some days when words must be written, I just can’t let myself get sucked into the Twitter-verse. It can be such a rabbit hole sometimes. I’ll try adding a quick visit to social media sites at the end of each writing day to my schedule and see if that helps.
Today’s Motivational Music: We have a gorgeous cool, windy day here in our neck of the NC woods. My favorite kind of weather day! Autumn is my favorite season of the year. It makes me feel happy, hopeful and energized. Like Yo-Yo Ma’s, Bach Cello Suite No 1 Prelude. I hope whereever you are, you have a Happy First Day of Autumn!
