The Accidental Firestarter

On Writing: On my plate today, another day of revising my GH book, BRINGING DELANEY HOME. I seriously started this on Monday, but now that I’m elbows-deep into it, I am regretting that I don’t use Scrivener! I have it on my computer and even took a class, but never really had the time to figure it out. It seems to me that Scrivener is perfect for this type of revising though, where you’re pulling scenes out and moving them around. If anyone took a Scrivener class that really helped them understand it, I’d love to hear about it.

On Life: I promised to tell you the story about the fire extinguisher incident on my birthday. No! It has nothing to do with the number of candles on my cake! Here’s what happened: For my birthday, we brought home take-out Chinese food, except Complexson doesn’t like Chinese food, so we brought him a small pepperoni pizza. Everyone dished up their food from the island and moved to the table to eat. I didn’t pay attention to what Complexson did. But he grabbed a couple of slices of pizza and put the rest of his pizza in the oven to stay warm. Anyone see where this is heading?

20 year old son + lack of kitchen experience = a firey conflagration in the oven.

The Engineer said, “I smell smoke.” Everyone turned to look in the kitchen and our attention got snagged by the red glow coming from the oven where small puffs of smoke were just beginning to waft out. So, anyone remember what happens when you add oxygen to a fire?

Fire + Oxygen = Bigger Fire
Opened the oven door to see what was glowing, oxygen flowed in and the flames shot out. Quick thinking husband grabbed the fire extinguisher from cabinet and put out the fire. Turns out Complexson didn’t know to put the pizza in the oven on the “warm” setting. He’s only used the “broil” setting so that is what he turned on.

Cardboard pizza box on top rack of oven + Broil setting = A darn big fire.
The good news: we were right there to take care of it. I shudder to think if he’d done this while alone and then gone up to his room to shower. Makes my heart skip a beat to think about it.
The silver lining: we can now tease him for the next few years about this. About once a day one of his siblings plays him a new theme song. “Burning Down the House,” Talking Heads, “Ring of Fire” by Johnny Cash. “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” Billy Joel, “Flame Thrower,” J Geils Band, “Fire on the Mountain,” Marshall Tucker Band….and many, many more. His siblings can have fun with this for a looooong time.
The scary news: the guy is heading back to school to an apartment. With a kitchen. I feel the need to give him a 2 week crash course on “How to Cook Without Setting Your House on Fire or a Trip to the ER in Ten Easy Lessons.” So, that’s the story of “The Accidental Firestarter” and how we used our fire extinguisher for the first time ever. In honor of Complexson, today’s inspiration… “Burning Down the House,” by the Talking Heads.
