MMA Cagematch: New Health Kick VS. My Old Vices

In One Corner: New Health Kick, Represented by the Grapefruit
In the Other Corner: Old Vice, Represented by “The Grape”

This time…my new health kick won out. Here’s how it went down: Right around the time I started “my plan” to get back in shape and work out (Feb 10th or 11th) I also cleaned up my eating habits. You know, eat real food like meat, fish, eggs, veggies, fruit and eliminate alcohol, wheat and sugar. The first two weeks of eating clean are the hardest, but after that it gets easier, especially when I start to feel better aka more energy. So, things were going great. Eating healthy. Working out and working.
And then yesterday strolled into my life. Like a dirty two-bit hustling punk looking to cause trouble. Like a big bully who kicked me around, pushed me into a snowbank and stole my lunch money. And then bragged about it at recess. Yup, a day-long snowfall which led to–> shoveling, and then dealing with something that didn’t go the way I’d hoped.
It seemed like the perfect evening to kick back with a piece of pepperoni and bacon pizza and a glass of Cabernet. Guess what? One bite and one sip and I knew it wasn’t going to work. Because…GUILT. That bitch. AND more importantly, I’ve been feeling great physically, so when the pizza and wine didn’t taste better than how good I’ve been feeling– I stopped. And had leftover baked chicken and a glass of water. Holy cow, that sounds awful compared to the pizza and wine, but it honestly wasn’t.
Does this mean I will never eat pizza and wine again? Um….hell no. Because life is short, and I enjoy pizza and wine and even sugar when it’s baked into the luscious goodness of a big fat slab of cheesecake or a fabulous piece of decadent chocolate cake. It just means that for the time being I’m going to reach for different vices to handle the crappy days. A healthy vice, which is a total oxymoron, but on those days when if feels like life is beating me up…I’ll be like Rocky and punch and kick the heck out of  this–>

While I run this speech from the 2006 Rocky Balboa movie through my head:
“The world ain’t all sunshine and rainbows. It’s a very mean and nasty place and I don’t care how tough you are it will beat you to your knees and keep you there permanently if you let it. You, me, or nobody is gonna hit
as hard as life. But it ain’t about how hard ya hit. It’s about how hard you can get it and keep movin forward. How much you can take and keep moving forward. That’s how winning is done!
Now if you know what you’re worth then go out and get what you’re worth. But ya gotta be willing to take the hits, and not pointing fingers saying you ain’t where you wanna be because of him, or her, or anybody! Cowards do that and that ain’t you! You’re better than that!” – Rocky Balboa
Do you have a “go-to” stress reliever that works for you?
